Les habitants d’une petite ville de la plaine hongroise voient débarquer un étrange cirque itinérant. À son bord se trouvent « la plus grande baleine du monde » et un mystérieux prince. Leur présence fascine János, jeune postier et visionnaire simple, qui va assister à la montée du chaos dans sa ville, déclenchant bientôt un torrent de violence et de beauté…
Avec "Les Harmonies Werckmeister", film poème aux trente-neuf plans-séquences adapté du romancier László Krasznahorkai, le cinéaste hongrois Béla Tarr atteint de nouveaux sommets de perfection filmique. Happé dès les premières minutes par ces images d’une beauté saisissante à la lisière du cauchemar, le spectateur pénètre dans un monde où l’horreur et la beauté coexistent dans un conflit permanent. À travers les errances de János, personnage aux airs de héros dostoïevskien, le film transcende la médiocrité du quotidien par le biais de sublimes envolés métaphysiques. Les longs et puissants travellings contemplatifs, la majesté du noir et blanc, la beauté des visages marqués apparaissent comme des tentatives d’une harmonie retrouvée à partir des vestiges du monde. Fable cosmique sur la condition humaine, "Les Harmonies Werckmeister" est également un réquisitoire virulent contre le pouvoir de la foule, pouvant être interprété comme une allégorie de la montée du fascisme et des horreurs de l’Holocauste, comme du climat de peur régnant sur le bloc soviétique. Doté d’une distribution exceptionnelle, dont Hanna Schygulla, actrice fétiche de R.W. Fassbinder, et d’une partition hypnotique composée par Mihály Víg, "Les Harmonies Werckmeister" est à retrouver pour la première fois dans sa sublime restauration 4K !
